“Story” by Nika Patrice 

 

 

The greatest threat is not bombs, or global warming,
or weapons, or disease, or rising technology.
As long as there is a human being alive,
the greatest threat to human beings will be
meaninglessness.
because without meaning, without that, 
we will give up on having a world at all. 
we will see no point in, nor have the energy, nor pockets of consensus 
needed, to affect anything at all. 
Story is the only invocation powerful 
enough to slay the dragon of meaninglessness. 
or to harness the power of the dragon, soothe it, transmute it, 
so that there is only the *power* left behind, 
to invoke change, 
and there is no. dragon. to. slay. at. all.
Story is a bridge to, and through, and amongst all of the other arts.
Don’t let anyone tell you story, or any of the arts, any art, 
must be seen as trivial or some small thing, or some side thing.
It is no small thing, dear artist.
Art. In this world. It is needed.
And art art art
Art
